Method

Using the basis of bioswales, we developed a design that would implement several checkpoints at major inflow points on the Trinity that would use a combination of solid waste filters and natural bioswales to filter water from the phosphate and nitrate content within it and use those compounds to fuel growth of the plants within the bioswales, many of which are native to the North Texas region. The design itself can be flexible, enabling for multiple projects all with varying effects and costs, with several being well within the limits of small community projects.

Spreading awareness on this issue is a key part of our strategy. By informing people of the consequence of seemingly trivial activities, we can help lower the levels of harmful compounds in the water, such as picking up pet waste and properly disposing of grass clippings, both of which can lower the phosphate and nitrate concentrations in the water. Thus, we spread this information within our school and several other locations, giving presentations to educate the people.
